SHATTR

Breakbeat slicer -- chop the loop, replay the pieces.

Overview

SHATTR chops a loaded break into slices and lets you re-sequence them live. IMPORT loads your own loop; the waveform shows the chop and the sample list holds the slots.

Slice count comes from each row's S/MS detection knobs; the < 16 / 16 > pager shifts the note-to-chop mapping for long lists and the keyboard triggers slices. The SMP/FX tabs swap the right-hand panel between the sample list and the shared FX rack (routed through the master or per-rack channel selected in the combo).

The SLICER/PADS tabs swap the centre between the chop waveform and the pattern sequencer: a 16x16 matrix of 256 pads, each holding a step pattern that latches on a quantised boundary.

FX-rack randomization is filed to the preset list as rnd-* history.

1. The whole instrument

Waveform + chop controls centre, sample list or FX rack right, control panel left, keyboard bottom.

2. Importing & chopping

Load a break, dial in the slice detection, play the pieces.

  1. IMPORT loads a loop -- you can also drag & drop an audio file (wav/aiff/flac/mp3/ogg) straight onto the waveform, or double-click the empty view to browse. The waveform draws the chop markers over the audio.

  2. The < 16 / 16 > pager shifts the note-to-chop mapping by 16 chops per click -- the CHOPS +N readout shows the current offset. With many chops (and variation rows) this pages which slices the keys and pads trigger.

  3. The waveform is a full editor: click a chop section to select it (drives the FX rack and the pattern-editor brush), drag a slice marker to move the boundary live, wheel zooms horizontally around the cursor and drag pans while zoomed. Hovering a chop pops an info box with its number, trigger note and FX chain.

  4. Right-click a chop for its menu: the FX rack submenu routes just that chop through rack lane 1-16 (each lane owns a full effect chain -- the combo above the rack picks which one you're editing), Add marker here splits the slice, Remove marker merges it with its neighbour, and Delete slice drops the chop entirely.

  5. The + button (top-right) adds a variation row: an alternate re-chop of the same loop, rendered deterministic so it survives save/restore. Every row has its own S (sensitivity) and MS (min slice ms) knobs that re-slice just that row, R re-rolls the variation's seed, /\ and \/ move it up/down the stack, and X removes it. Variations extend the global chop list -- original slices first, then each row's slices -- so pads and keys address them like any other chop.

  6. The sample list holds the loaded slots; the keyboard triggers slices left-to-right. Right-click a slot for Load to slicer, Show in folder and Delete (your own imports).

3. FX rack

The FX tab swaps the sample list for the shared rack.

  1. Switch to FX -- reorderable slots, per-slot RDM, and the combo at the top picks which channel's chain you're editing.

  2. RND CHAIN / RND FX / RND PRM re-roll the chain -- every roll is filed as an rnd-* preset entry.

4. Pads & pattern editor

The PADS centre tab swaps the waveform for the sequencer.

  1. Switch to PADS: a 16x16 matrix of 256 little pads -- 16 groups of 16 -- each latching its pattern; mono, one pad at a time. On sample load every empty pad is auto-filled with a different library pattern, so the matrix is playable immediately. A pad shows its number, a mini tick-map of its hits, and a bank corner-tick. The Q button picks the switch quantize: Q:BAR latches on the next bar, Q:BT on the next beat, Q:NW jumps instantly -- stratus-style. Notes 96-111 latch the 16 pads of the selected pad's group from MIDI -- select a group, and a 4x4 controller addresses all 256 sixteen at a time; the countdown bar on a pad shows the wait to the boundary. While a pad plays, click its bottom progress strip to jump the playhead to that step. Right-click a pad for its Bank: by default every pad plays the live sliced loop (GLOBAL), but SNAPSHOT current stores the loaded sample+slices as a new bank -- load another loop, snapshot again, and pads can run different breaks at once. The pad menu also offers Play/Stop, Randomize, GEN pad (a library combo just for this pad), Copy / Paste / Clear, All off (stops every pad), GEN ALL to fill empty pads and RE-GEN ALL to regenerate the whole matrix. The KEY:CHOP/KEY:PAT button next to the tabs picks what notes do: CHOP = notes play slices (pads stay on 96-111), PAT = every note latches a pad (note 0-127 -> pad 1-128), so the whole keyboard becomes a pattern launch grid.

    Pads & pattern editor
    Pads & pattern editor -- 11-pads
  2. PATTERN mode is the breakchop-style grid: one row per lane (P1..P16 on the left, each playing the chop number on its label), one column per step -- a step can hit several rows at once. Left-click toggles a cell, right-click cycles drill subdivisions 0-2-3-4-6-8-A, drag up/down sets velocity, drag left/right sets probability, wheel trims velocity. Wheel on a row label (or the chop strip at the bottom, or the slice you click on the waveform) reassigns the row's chop; right-click a row label opens a menu with an Assign chop submenu, Clear row and Mute row (unassign).

    Pads & pattern editor
    Pads & pattern editor -- 12-pattern
  3. SHFL swing, HUM humanize and SUB subdivide are stored per pattern. AUTO makes the subdivider read each chop's length -- short chops rattle into drill rolls that fill the step, long chops play once. DIV sets the step division, LEN the length. FIL and CHA drive the smart randomizer: rows are classified by slice length (long = kicks on beats, mid = snares on backbeats, short = hats on offbeats) and chaos blends in pure random. LIB opens the MIDI drum-pattern library -- 90+ proven patterns: classic breaks, DnB, house, techno, UKG, trap, drill, jazz, latin, IDM and more, mapped onto the rows by detected drum type. EVO mutates the loaded pattern (intensity = CHA). RND-MX re-generates the whole 256-pad matrix from the library: each pad gets a proven base pattern, often fused with a second one (overlay or appended), a light mutation pass, and a length snapped to the 4-128 step grid. RND/CPY/PST/CLR manage the pattern. Row labels show the slicer's drum-category guess (K=kick S=snare H=hat O=open hat R=rim X=crash T=tom P=perc) -- every slice is spectrally analysed when it is cut.
